The assessment criteria for the Green Innovative Practice Award are based on the Eco-Innovation Model. This model depicts that the process of developing eco-innovative solutions will provide both business value and environmental benefits.
This category principally examines how an organisation is committed to creating an environment that encourages the generation of green ideas among staff. Indicators to be reviewed include the types of mechanisms or programmes established to facilitate green idea generation, degree of staff involvement in the green idea generation process, and management attitude to green ideas raised.
Assessment for this category is principally based on the green innovative method nominated by a candidate. The method will be judged primarily on how it has been successfully generated and its effect upon the environment. It can be an innovation in the operation process itself or in materials, method, management or procurement that improves the business process and benefits the environment. The method must not merely be an idea that has merit and may be successful in the future. It must be a proven success in terms of measurable improvements to environmental quality or long-term environmental benefits.
The process of green idea generation can be instrumental in promoting change and improvements, not only within the idea-generating organisation but also in the community. Community contribution particularly looks at how the nominated green innovative method has benefited or created an impact on the candidate’s customers, business partners and the general community.
The assessment criteria for the Green SME Award and Green Property Management Awards (Commercial & Industrial Buildings, Public Housing and Private Housing) are based on the Eco-Business Model. This model is designed to exemplify the strong relationship between the internal workings of a business and the surrounding environment. The key factors, including Green Leadership,ProgrammeandPerformance and PartnerSynergy, are generally considered in the integration of environmental measures within a business organisation.
Green leadership refers to the level of commitment made by an organisation’s upper management in the pursuit of environmental objectives within the organisation and the commitment of managers and staff to the implementation of environmental initiatives. Indicators to be reviewed include the types of environmental programmes established by management, the amount of training provided and resources used for the programmes, the degree of staff involvement in carrying out programme tasks, and the manner in which programme progress is monitored for continual improvement.
This category assesses the accomplishments made by organisations when carrying out their environmental programmes. Environmental measures undertaken during the daily operations of the organisation will be evaluated for effectiveness. The extent to which an organisation has achieved compliance with environmental regulations; conservation of energy and water; reduction, reuse and recycling of waste material; and improvement of environmental quality such as noise control, outdoor and indoor air quality will be reviewed.
Partner synergy looks at how an organisation explores opportunities to inform suppliers and contractors about the importance of environmental management and encourage them to adopt their own environmental strategies in their individual operations. The extent to which the organisation participates in environmental education for its customers and the general community is also relevant.
